In the wake of the dual strike I would like to remind everyone that “hollywood elites” is an antisemitic dogwhistle and if you are referring to company executives call them executives

I would further like to add that “cabal” is an antisemitic dogwhistle a pretty decent chunk of the time. You’ll really only see it used in three contexts: people using it as a dogwhistle, people using it not knowing it’s a dogwhistle and thus making it easier to fly under the radar, and, rarely, in a joking way where they not only don’t know it’s a dogwhistle, they’re not even entirely sure how the word is supposed to be used.

It has its origins in the word “Kabbalah,” which is a Jewish learning pathway so closed that even most Jews can’t partake in it. (It’s Jewish mysticism, and at an absolute bare minimum to begin study you should be a Jewish adult extremely well-versed in Torah and Talmud; the stricter Orthodox practice states you must be a learned, male, married Torah scholar over the age of 40.) Because people enjoy shitting on closed practices, goyim were quick to go IT IS SECRET SINISTER WORLD-DOMINATION PLANS, and that is where the word cabal came from.

So: if you mean “monopoly,” as in “The Walt Disney Company has brought almost all modern major audiovisual properties under its control in a monopoly that controls well over 75% of wide-release and streaming media,” please say monopoly.

The golden rule is really “if you don’t know, ASK YOUR PRINT PEOPLE WHAT THEY PREFER.” And then, most importantly–SEND THEM WHAT THEY ASK YOU FOR!!!

I work in an industry that sometimes requires us to use customer-supplied art and let me tell you internets, you wouldn’t believe some of the bullshit we’ve had sent to us.

About 90% of our customers are people whose entire design experience is something like “MS Word and maybe Windows 95-era greeting card maker software”, so we try to keep it simple: 

• DO send a vector file if you have one; .EPS or .AI are great. PDF may work if it’s all you have (fortunately most of the PDFs we get do contain vector art). 
• If you don’t have a vector (or give me that “dog hearing high pitched noise” look when I say “vector”), just send us the largest, clearest image you have and we’ll work with it. Not photos of the artwork on other stuff–the artwork itself.
• DO NOT embed it in Word documents or Powerpoint presentations or anything else. Absolutely DO NOT. NO NO NO. 
• JUST SEND THE IMAGE.
  

You’d think this would be simple even for someone who doesn’t know a JPEG from a PNG from their ass from their elbow from a hole in the ground, right? You would think that. You would think that and you would be wrong.

Here is a partial list of the shit we’ve gotten from people who have been given these instructions:

• 100x100 72dpi jpegs with more artifacts than the entire run of Sweet Bro and Hella Jeff
  
• animated gifs and even worse, videos (you know this isn’t Harry Potter world, right? you know I can’t engrave a damn MOVIE on your plaque, right?)
• .doc, .ppt, .pub, .xls–otherwise known as the exact things I specifically asked them NOT to send
• photograph of a business card or letterhead with logo on, usually out of focus and taken at a weird angle–otherwise known as the other exact thing I specifically asked them NOT to send but wait, it gets better…
• photograph of sign with logo on, usually out of focus, taken at a weird angle, and partially obscured by vegetation, buildings, or someone’s head
• photograph of t-shirt with logo on, usually out of focus, taken at a weird angle, and wrinkled and/or partially folded
• photograph of person wearing t-shirt with logo on, usually out of focus, taken at a weird angle, and several sizes too large/too small
• e-mail containing naught but a link to a Google image search whose results are so diverse it is impossible to tell what the hell this person wants
  
• heavily watermarked pay stock thumbnail (and people who send us pay stock links or logos they don’t have rights to and get irate when told “you have to pay for this stock/you can’t use this logo” are worth a whoooole ‘nother post)
• here in the year of our Lord two thousand and seventeen we still occasionally have people attempt to FAX US FULL COLOR ARTWORK (yes we do have a fax machine but that is not what it is for, one of our suppliers still does most of their order-taking via faxed paper order form)
  

People. Please. Just ask the printers what they need from you. And then give them what they ask you for. 

I tripped over this post tonight and feel I should inform y'all that here in the year of our lord two thousand and twenty three this has not gotten better and in fact just last week someone sent us a .docx containing a screenshot of Google image search results. Jesus take the wheel.
